Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that looks at diseases of the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, small and large intestines (bowel), liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
You should see a gastroenterologist if you have any symptoms of a digestive health disorder or if you need a colon cancer screening. Often, seeing a gastroenterologist leads to more accurate detection of polyps and cancer, fewer complications from procedures and less time spent in the hospital.
Your first appointment with your gastroenterologist will probably take 30-60 minutes. They'll ask you about your symptoms, medical history, and any treatments you've tried. Other visits could be shorter.
Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the digestive tract and the gallbladder, liver, bile ducts, and pancreas. Gastroenterologists are doctors who are trained to diagnose and treat problems in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver.
The doctor may take samples of tissue or fluid using instruments inserted into the scope. The samples are sent to the lab to be studied. A HIDA scan checks the function of the gallbladder or liver. A radioactive fluid (marker) is put into the body.
Pancreatitis and pancreatic pseudocyst. Intestinal problems, such as polyps and cancer, infections, celiac disease, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, malabsorption, short bowel syndrome, and intestinal ischemia. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and hiatal hernia.
The first part of your initial consultation with a member of the Pancreas Center GI/Endoscopy team will be similar to any physician visit. You will undergo a thorough history and physical where you will be asked to discuss your personal health history as well as any incidence of cancer in your family.
